Halloween Decoration Hanging From Noose Upsets South Sacramento Neighbors
SACRAMENTO (CBS13) — Residents say Halloween decorations in their neighborhood went from frightfully fun to a distasteful distraction in South Sacramento.
The homeowners says the decorations is just good, clean fun, but many others say there's a difference between spooky and downright inappropriate.
People passing by the home say they were shocked at what they said looked like a black person hanging from a tree by a noose.
"With all the things going on with the Black Lives Matter, that's the first thing we thought, too—that someone's trying to send the wrong message," one person said.
But it turns out the decoration was a Curious George doll dressed in a flannel shirt with a black hood over its head. Homeowner Alicia Gazca says it's just a harmless Halloween decoration that's supposed to be a robber wearing a mask.
But after the family heard that some people were offended by the decoration, they decided to cut it down.
Neighbors say it's an important lesson about being sensitive to other people's perspective in the racially diverse community.
"Displaying somebody hanging from a tree—that's hate and it shouldn't be tolerated."
