MODESTO (CBS13) - A former high school teacher who made national headlines for his relationship with a former student will be sentenced Wednesday for a crime dating back more than a decade.

In a last minute plea deal Monday, James Hooker avoided trial by pleading no contest to having oral sex in 1998 with a then-17-year old student of his.

With the deal, he'll avoid jail time unless he violates his probation. In addition, Hooker will have to register as a sex offender for life and is banned from seeking contact with girls between the ages of 12 and 18 without supervision.

The 43-year-old former Enochs High School teacher is expected to be sentenced to a suspended jail term of 180 days and four years of probation.

Hooker made headlines for his relationship with another former student -- Jordyn Powers -- who has appeared at his court appearances.
