Former Candidate For Governor Gets Mistrial In Attempted Murder Case
FRESNO, Calif. (AP) -- A mistrial has been declared in the case of a former California gubernatorial candidate accused of shooting and wounding his neighbor last year.
The Fresno Bee reports jurors were deadlocked 9-3 Tuesday and couldn't convict 49-year-old Tye Glenn Champ on charges of attempted murder and assault with a deadly weapon.
Champ had testified that he shot 41-year-old John Harrison Price after Price attacked him with a knife outside his home in Prather. The two had gotten into an argument after Champ slashed the tires of an ATV that belonged to Price's 13-year-old son.
Champ admitted he also fired at Price's horse paddock, but he was found not guilty Tuesday in a horse's death.
In his Republican bid for governor last year, Champ received 1.8 percent of the vote.
