Fire Fighters Battle Grass Fires Overnight; Expect More This Weekend
NORTH HIGHLANDS (CBS13) – Fire fighters battled two grass fires overnight and expect more of them as we head into the Fourth of July holiday with hot, dry weather.
One fire burned near some railroad tracks at Raley Boulevard in North Highlands.
Crews were able to quickly douse the small fire. No structures were in the area.
It's unclear what started the blaze but crews did find a burned out car in the field.
Earlier, crews were called out to a fire burning along Watt Avenue and I Street in Sacramento.
Additional crews had to be called out before they could get the flames under control. The fire burned about two acres and, at one point, the flames threatened a nearby post office.
Fire officials say the conditions right now could mean more fires this weekend.
"With this holiday weekend coming and we have lots of fireworks going in Sacramento County, with hot, dry, windy conditions, the conditions are favorable for a catastrophic fire," said Captain Roman Rubalcava of the Sacramento Metro Fire Department. "That's something we'll be trying to avoid this weekend."
No one was hurt in the fire.
