Few Answers Provided After Shooting Of Suspect
ROSEVILLE, Calif. (CBS13) – Authorities are answering few questions about the shooting of a potentially unarmed theft suspect who was shot in the back by an off-duty deputy Sunday afternoon.
Officers with the Rocklin Police Department began chasing 22-year-old Sergey Pautov after he allegedly stole lottery tickets from a Rocklin AM-PM convenience store, but lost him in a Roseville neighborhood after the suspect allegedly ditched a stolen Honda Civic and fled on foot.
The Roseville Police Department said an off-duty Placer County Sheriff's deputy who was monitoring the chase on a scanner caught up with Pautov in Cambria Park.
Witnesses said the deputy warned the man to stop or be shot, and when Pautov attempted to jump over a wall, he was shot in the back and leg, suffering life threatening injuries.
Authorities said Sunday night they had not recovered any weapon belonging to the suspect.
Roseville Police Lt. Merv Screeton said he couldn't answer any questions about the investigation until it is completed.
"The District Attorney's office will monitor that, and then it will be submitted to them for their own investigation," Screeton said.
Pautov has been upgraded to stable condition and remains hospitalized for his injuries.
