Fair Oaks Murder Suspect's Mother Arrested At Sacramento Courthouse
SACRAMENTO (CBS13) - In what became an unexpected family reunion on Tuesday, a woman who arrived at the Sacramento County Courthouse where her son was supposed to face a murder charge was instead arrested herself.
Naquita Trotter was arrested and taken to jail as she waited for her son's murder arraignment. Moses Trotter, 32, is accused of the brutal slaying of a 79-year-old Fair Oaks woman Sunday night.
"Her identity was known," Sacramento County sheriff's Deputy Jason Ramos said of Owens. "It was clear that she had an outstanding warrant for her arrest. It was a no bail warrant, which takes a certain amount of discretion out of our hands."
Trotter's warrant goes back to December 2009. She pleaded no contest to charges of elder abuse and falsely impersonating a certified nursing assistant, then failed to appear for two court dates.
On Tuesday she showed up for he son's court appearance that never happened. The jail's psychological staff deemed Trotter unable to attend his scheduled arraignment. He was arraigned in his jail cell instead. He's on a psych hold at the jail.
"I can't elaborate on the circumstances because he has certain HIPAA protections," Ramos said of Trotter's mental condition. "From time to time we need to adjust things. He was arraigned up in the housing unit he is in."
Trotter is now officially charged with a single count of murder in the death of 79-year-old Carole Sturgis in her Fair Oaks home on Olympic Way.
There is still no known motive for the attack.
A pastor at New Life Community Church in Orangevale confirmed to CBS13 that Trotter attended church services Sunday morning as a guest.
Witnesses say they saw Trotter later that day breaking into homes.
As neighbors chased him, investigators say he broke into Sturgis' home, locking the door and killing her.
He would walk out a few minutes later, naked and covered in blood.
There were at least 10 friends or family members at the courthouse to see Trotter and two people there for Sturgis. Nobody wanted to comment on camera.
