Despite High Temperatures, Thousands Enjoy Citrus Heights' Annual Pet-A-Palooza

CITRUS HEIGHTS (CBS13) - The triple digit temperatures didn't stop thousands from heading to Citrus Heights for Northern California's largest pet event, Pet-A-Palooza.

Furry friends found free family fun at the Pet-A-Palooza event at Rusch Park.

"It's warm out here," said Pet owner Linda Zisko.

Try 15 degrees above what it should be this time of year.

"I think it's about the worst here so far," said Chad Rufer, Now 100.5 Program Director.

Since the event started three years ago, safety is at high importance.

"We've come up with a lot of ways to keep everyone safe," said Rufer.

There's everything from little water wading pools and hydration stations to the big splash dog pool.

"We've been out here the last three years, it's been really nice. I like going into the pools," said pet owner Jay Aldrich.

Organizers also put out misting tents and fans to help pets beat the heat.

"We have what we call a swamp cooler, which is one of the biggest fans that you've ever seen in making sure everyone stays cool," said Rufer.

Law enforcement, paramedics, and veterinarians were on standby for heat related symptoms.

Pet owners also were prepared.

"I've got bottled water in my bag," said Aldrich.

And, the must have accessories on a hot day are hats, sunglasses and umbrellas.

Zisko says she wasn't going to miss the event because of the weather, so she, like thousands of others, came out early.

"Water, lots of water, shade keeps them cool. Don't let them run around just make them comfortable," said Zisko.

The event also included a musical performance by American Idol season eight winner Kris Allen.
