Driver on Interstate 5 in Sacramento killed after big rig crashes into their truck

The California Highway Patrol said a driver was killed after his vehicle was hit by a big rig early Saturday morning while on Interstate 5 in Sacramento.

Around 7 a.m., the driver of a pick-up truck was traveling in the #3 lane of northbound Interstate 5, north of Sutterville Road, when it lost a tire and became disabled.

The CHP said a tractor-trailer, towing two trailers, was traveling in the same lane but did not have time to react and struck the pick-up. Both vehicles caught fire, and when first responders arrived, they found the pick-up truck driver had died at the scene.

The driver of the tractor-trailer had minor injuries and was taken to the hospital. Neither drugs nor alcohol appears to be a factor in the crash.

The CHP in their initial response had said the big rig driver was not injured and that the pick-up truck was on the side of the road when it was struck. In an update, they clarified that the crash happened in the #3 lane and that the big rig driver did have minor injuries.

The pick-up truck driver was identified as 21-year-old Victor Castaneda.
