Coping with Change

My 7th grader started at a brand new school today. New school, new friends, new life, really. He'd been looking forward to it all summer, but then when it actually became reality, he got nervous. The second-guessing started and doubts bubbled to the surface. Being his Mom, I was expecting it to happen sooner or later. He'd frankly impressed me with how carefree he'd been about it until then.

On our day one drive-in I think I talked him through his fears, though I expect we'll have a few more conversations like it. I have to admit, it felt a talk I've had with myself, time and time again. I went to eight different schools before going off to college. No transition was easy. I always felt queasy and clammy during the first week or so. However, each time, I grew stronger and happier.

After my days of hop-scotching around different schools, I married a military man and built a two decade career in the media. I've made new friends and grown new roots more times than I care to count. I was well prepared for a life that turned into an adventure.

I realize, though, that as I chatted with my son this morning, I focused only on how normal it was to feel scared, and to expect more challenges ahead.  But I forgot to explain that as you cope with change, you can also try to treasure it. He may be building life skills that will help him be whatever he wants: resilience is critical in our culture.  But it's just as important to remember that change is not just something to get through, you can also choose to open your mind to the moment and recognize the adventure hidden within it.
