CHP Officer Shot In Eureka, Suspect Killed

EUREKA, Calif. (AP) - Authorities said a California Highway Patrol officer was shot and wounded in Northern California by a man who died from the injuries he sustained when the officer returned fire.

Eureka Police Chief Andrew Mills said the officer was struck Sunday afternoon during a traffic stop.

Mills said a man got out of the car and began firing a handgun at the officer. The office returned fire, wounding the suspect who died of his injuries at a hospital.

The Eureka Times-Standard reports the injured officer held three passengers in the vehicle at gunpoint until other officers got to the scene. Two men and a woman were detained for questioning.

The officer was taken to a hospital with a wounded right leg.

No further details were released by police.
