Call Kurtis Investigates: Bacon Bikini Contest Update
Roseville (CBS13) -- A Call Kurtis investigation exposed a bacon bikini benefit for a charity that doesn't exist.
Now one of the contestants wants to set the record straight.
Model Cynthia Gardner who was called "Diamond" during the event says she only signed up for the bacon bikini contest because she thought it would help kids with diabetes. Finding out the charity isn't real she says, "It's sick to me. It's disappointing,"
She knows about sick kids needing help. Her own 2-year old son was born with a heart defect.
"And it's nothing to play with," she said. "It's not a joke. It's not a game. There are kids out there that need the help; the financial help."
Cynthia and three other women competed by wearing bikinis made of bacon the night of October 22 at Lightftoot's California Cuisine in Roseville.
She says she danced extra hard to help sell raffle tickets for the Jordan Lightfoot Foundation for Juvenile Diabetes.
Restaurant owner Steve Lightfoot claimed to set up the charity for his own 19-year old daughter Jordan, who spoke that night.
"I've been diabetic for almost 14-years, so I want to be able to help kids go through what I went through," she told the crowd."
Jordan later told us she was shocked to learn the charity her dad said he created wasn't real.
"It disgusts me," she said. "It's not right."
Steve Lightfoot insisted to us he filed the paperwork for the charity. He claimed the records were at a home office, but later said he could not provide paperwork to prove it, and admitted he didn't follow all the necessary steps to create the charity.
He promised me he'd donate the $110 raised to real non-profit today; The Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.
We had a camera there, but he never showed up with that donation. The organization confirmed he didn't make one.
After all this, Cynthia Gardner regrets ever taking part in the bacon bikini benefit.
"If I knew it wasn't for charity, I wouldn't have been working as hard as I really was," she said. "I probably wouldn't have put myself on stage with bacon to be honest."
Lightfoot left me a message this afternoon, saying his attorney advised him not to show up to make the donation, with our camera there
He assured me he was making the donation, and would show me a receipt.
He hasn't answered my calls tonight, and we're still waiting for that receipt.
