Budget Protesters Marching From Yuba City To Capitol

YUBA CITY, Calif. (CBS13) -- Dozens of protesters are making a long weekend trek to the Capitol to voice their outrage over proposed budget cuts to programs that support people with disabilities.

The "Mommy Tsunami" is walking 45 miles, from Yuba City to Sacramento, to draw attention to the consequences of the looming program reductions, which will hit parents with special needs children especially hard.

"The way I look at it, my daughter's rights were put on the chopping block," said Dianne Rose. "They will lose their day programs, they can't stay at home… they're going to start sending them back to institutions. That's the alternative."

The Lanterman Act, passed in the 1960s, gave people with disabilities the same rights as those without them and also provided for funding assistance.

The protesters hope to be in Sacramento to rally on the Capitol steps by Monday morning.
