Boy, 3, Shoots Self In Head

SHINGLETOWN, Calif. (AP) -- Authorities say a 3-year-old Shasta County boy is in critical condition after accidentally shooting himself in the head.

Emergency responders were called Sunday morning to a rural road outside Shingletown, between Redding and Lassen Volcanic National Park.

Authorities say the boy was hospitalized in Redding before being flown to UC Davis Medical Center in Sacramento. No update on his condition was available Monday morning.

Rick Stepp, who answered the phone at the home and said he was the boy's relative, told The Record Searchlight of Redding that the shooting was an accident.

Stepp said he did not know how the boy got the gun.

The sheriff's office did not release the name of the boy or his family. The incident is under investigation, but no arrests have been made.
