Bondsmen In Hot Water For Firing Shots At Suspect

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) - A bail bondsman is now a wanted man and two others had to be bailed out themselves after police say they shot at a suspect they were trying to bring in.

"I dont think they should be doing that," said Carol Lehman, who lives in the north Sacramento neighborhood where the shooting occurred.

"If they don't have the right to do that, they shouldn't be doing that," said another neighbor, Anna Mendoza. "Because if we don't have the right to be shooting at anybody, they shouldn't either."

It all started when the bondsmen cuffed a young suspect in the 500 block of El Camino Avenue on Thursday night. Police say somehow, he escaped and ran off. That's when one of the bondsmen allegedly shot at him until he stopped running. Neighbors say at least five shots were fired around dinnertime in an area where children play.

"It's wrong because there's a lot of kids around here, a lot of kids," Mendoza said.

A few hours later, when the bondsmen tried to book him into the Yolo County Jail, cops ended up cuffing them instead for conspiracy and threatening with a firearm not in self-defense. But Sacramento police say the shooter wasn't with them, and they're still trying to bring him in.

Police wouldn't release the men's names because the third man is still being sought.

CBS13 tracked down the bail bond company witnesses say they work for, but employees say they had nothing to do with it and directed us to another bail bond business operated by a cousin. Detectives are still trying to sort out who these guys work for.

Topo Padilla with Greg Padilla Bail Bonds says bondsmen should never use a weapon unless in self-defense, and then police should be called immediately.

"If a gun was fired, law enforcement needs to be notified and come to the scene to so the can put the pieces of the puzzle together," Padilla said.
