Best Spring 2015 Races In Sacramento

There is no one race that tops all others. They are all good around here. No matter how you pound the pavement, turn the pedals or slice through the water, you'll find something around here to fit your style. Many of the races are charity based, and some are just around because they're just simply fun. Choose your race and enjoy your time on the course this spring in Sacramento.

Saturday, March 14 and Sunday, March 15 will see runners of all kinds hitting the bricks for this event. The 5k and the Kids Leprechaun 1/2-mile chase are Saturday, with the 1/2 marathon run on Sunday. Blue Diamond Almonds sponsors the race. Wind your way though Sacramento and enjoy 15 live bands along the way. Runners go over the Tower Bridge and into West Sac and Raley Field for the finish. You'll be in the company of perhaps 10,000 other like-minded souls, elite runners and newer athletes alike, smiling all the way.

Want to find out if you are the tortoise or the hare? Register for the Sunday, April 19 ZooZoom. This is the 35th year that runners will gather for a fun run that benefits the Sacramento Zoo. Run the 5K or the 10K, and enjoy the course as you make your way through beautiful Land Park. You'll finish near the entrance to the venerable zoo, perhaps being welcomed by lions, tigers and bears. Not a runner? The 5K is a run or walk course. After your trot around the park, enjoy the zoo and the animals that will benefit from your run.

Sunday, February 8 will see the start of the 33d annual Davis Stampede. This race has been a regional favorite since it first began. Your choices are between a 5K, 10K or a 13.1 half marathon. If you are on the kid side of the ledger, you can run a half or quarter mile. The race is run over a generally flat course and will wind through some green belt, downtown and a couple of neighborhoods. Goodies galore will fill your swag needs, including a choice between a tech and cotton tee shirts. Timing for the more elite minded, and everyone else, is by chip, insuring bragging rights if you are in the lead pack of any of the races.

On Saturday, May 30, the Gold Country Tour de Cure will start rolling. Cyclists of all ages will ride courses that cover 100, 62, 31 or 10 miles. Riders will pedal their way through some absolutely wonderful terrain. The requirement for this tour is that riders commit to raising at least $200 for the American Diabetes Association. Ride as part of a team or just ride it. The rides are fully supported, with a SAG wagon, mechanics support, fully stocked rest stops, medical personnel, tee shirts and a post-ride meal. Riders will come from the ranks of beginners on townie bikes riding the 10-mile route to the more experienced riding up to the 100-mile mark. Get a team together, start training and have a great ride through some of California's most scenic country.

This is quite a ride, and worth every pedal stroke no matter which distance you choose. Ride through the rolling countryside of Amador and El Dorado counties. Along the way you'll go through wine country in south El Dorado County and some historic gold rush towns. Slug Gulch Road is on the ride too. Your ride can be 35, 63, 102 or 122 miles. Each is designed for maximum enjoyment of the surrounding terrain. The race comes fully supported with rest stops, medics, SAG sweep, swag goodies and post-ride dinner.
