17-Year-Old Shot In Head In South Sacramento Dies

UPDATE: Investigators are saying the teen accidentally shot himself in the head.

According to the Sacramento County Sheriff's Department, homicide investigators found that 17-year-old Tayon Shelby was inside of a car in the area and handling a handgun.

At some point, Shelby shot himself accidentally.

Shelby was pronounced dead just after midnight on Wednesday.

Detectives are not looking for any suspects. Investigators said they originally believed there to be an outstanding suspect, but it was due to erroneous information given to them.

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) – A teen shot in the head on Tuesday night has died, deputies say.

The incident happened near Sunrise Greens Drive and Elsie Avenue just after 6 p.m.

A 17-year-old at the scene was found with a gunshot wound to the head, the Sacramento County Sheriff's Department says. He was rushed to the hospital.

Police later announced the teen died from his injuries a little after midnight Wednesday.

The Sacramento County Coroner's Office identifies the boy as 17-year-old Tayon Shelby.

Investigators have said the shooting doesn't appear to be gang-related. No suspect or motive for the shooting has been identified.
