100-Year-Old Water Line Breaks, Floods Downtown Sacramento Building

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) -- About 800 California Department of Justice employees are being told to stay home after a broken water pipe damaged their Sacramento headquarters and a nearby annex.

Department spokeswoman Kate Gibbs says the buildings near the state Capitol had some flooding early Wednesday.

The water apparently leaked on some telephone wires. Crews say cold temperatures may have caused an underground pipe to crack.

Employees in the building are being told to check in with their supervisors instead of coming to work.
