Residents Evacuated After Water Line Break, Landslide In East Pittsburgh

EAST PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- A landslide appears to be threatening an apartment building in East Pittsburgh, and part of the problem is a water main break.

Frustrated residents at 325 Electric Avenue Apartments declined to talk to KDKA on camera because they hadn't yet had a shower Monday.

Off-camera, one woman who lives in the complex told KDKA she saw water shooting into the air around 10 a.m. Monday.

According to her, the water line break happened before the landslide. She told KDKA once the water started gushing out of the line, it didn't take long for the hillside to start coming down.

Mud, debris and lots of water began traveling down the hill, flooding the lower level of the apartment building that sits closest to it.

The water and mud forced two of the residents who live on the first floor out of their units.

The water was out nearly all day Monday at the Electric Avenue Apartments. A worker from the Wilkinsburg-Penn Water Authority said late Monday night that they had successfully repaired the water line.

Residents can expect their water pressure to be a little low, but the line seems to be holding up.
