A North Carolina man has been charged with the murder of 18-year-old Danielle Dennis-Townes after police say they discovered her body in the trunk of his car in western Virginia. According to CBS affiliate WDBJ, police in Clifton Forge, Va. arrested 19-year-old Enrico Luciano Mascaro Friday night after he returned to his parked 1996 Mustang.
Police in Kitty Hawk, N.C. had put out a nationwide alert for Mascaro and Dennis-Towne of Steger, Ill., after finding a crime scene. WDBJ reports that police used cellular phone towers to track the Mustang to a parking lot in Clifton Forge, where it was placed under surveillance. Kitty Hawk Police Chief David R. Ward told The Associated Press early Monday that Mascaro has been charged with homicide in that coastal town. Mascaro, of Nags Head, N.C., is being held in the Alleghany County regional jail on a fugitive-from-justice charge and is expected to be arraigned Monday and extradited back to Kitty Hawk.
Dennis-Towne's grandfather, Charles Wheeler, tells told WDBJ that Danielle was in the Army's ROTC program. Wheeler says the last time he saw Danielle was at her high school graduation earlier this summer in Illinois, where she graduated near the top of her class. "Beautiful child. Well-behaved child, well-mannered child," Wheeler told the station. "You couldn't ask for a better grandchild than what Danielle was."
