The service, which begins with the medieval cathedral in total darkness and silence before the Advent Candle is lit at the West End, is one of the most popular services of the liturgical year. The annual advent service, which also takes place over tonight and tomorrow night and is seen by several thousand people, is a mix of music and readings during which two great candlelit processions move around the different spaces in the 12th-century building which, by the end, is illuminated by almost 1300 candles and is a spectacular start to the Christmas season.
Peru

Salt has been obtained in Maras since pre-Incan times by evaporating highly salty local subterranean stream water. The water is intricately channelled through constructions, flowing gradually down onto several hundred ancient terraced ponds. From each pond, a local member of the mine cooperative can produce 150 to 200 kilos per month which can be sold in the markets at $0.34 per kilogram, according to miners.

Vattenfall, the Swedish energy conglomerate that owns the Janeschwalde plant as well as nearby open-pit coal mines and other coal-burning power plants in Germany, is considering withdrawing from coal-related energy production in Lusatia, the region around Jaenschwalde.
The governors of Brandenburg and Saxony, the German states that share Lusatia, are in Sweden today for talks over the future of the plants and mines, on which directly and indirectly 15,000 jobs in the region are dependant. The Jaenschwalde plant, originally built by the former government of East Germany, is the fourth biggest single emitter of CO2 gas in Europe.
