So who took the cake at the social buffet called Oscar night? To start with, here's a big "hello" made in Hollywood heaven: Jennifer Aniston and George Clooney greet each other on the red carpet March 5, 2006.
Will Smith was no slouch when it came to making the scene. Here, he gives a hearty Oscar greeting to Jake Gyllenhaal.
What happens when two nominees run into each other? Want to bet on an air kiss or two? Here, Michelle Williams of "Brokeback Mountain" and Amy Adams of "Junebug" get some face time. Both were nominated as best supporting actress, and both lost to Rachel Weisz of "The Constant Gardener."
It's George Clooney again, this time with country queen Dolly Parton, who was nominated for original song ("Travelin' Thru" from "Transamerica"). She lost to "It's Hard Out Here For A Pimp" from "Hustle & Flow."
Speaking of "Hustle & Flow," here's Terrence Howard, who was nominated as best actor for his performance in that movie, talking with Will Smith and his wife, actress Jada Pinkett Smith.
It's hard out here for a gown, Heath Ledger seems to be saying as he sympathetically adjusts the dress of his girlfriend, actress Michelle Williams. Co-stars in "Brokeback Mountain," neither won the Oscar in their categories (lead actor for him and supporting actress for her).
Felicity Huffman, right, in a seriously sexy black gown, embraces her husband, actor William H. Macy, as they arrive for the Oscars. With these two, you get the feeling that they get along just fine without an Oscar on the mantel.
Say! It's George Clooney again! This time, he's hugging Grant Heslov, who was his collaborator on the screenplay for "Good Night, and Good Luck." They were up for an Oscar but lost to "Crash." Clooney did win as supporting actor for his work in "Syriana."
And, once again, it's Will Smith, this time saying hello to Will Ferrell and his wife, Viveca Paulin. Ferrell wasn't up for an Oscar, but a lot of people thought he and Steve Carell deserved some kind of award for their comical presentation of the Oscar for best makeup.
Naomi Watts, King Kong's leading lady, is the center of attention as she talks to the media on the red carpet.
And Matt Dillon had more than his share of attention from reporters. Although he lost to George Clooney in the supporting actor category, "Crash," the movie that brought him the nomination, took the biggest honor of the night.
Guess who? This time, George Clooney is focusing on Uma Thurman, who was looking like a true movie goddess on this Oscar night.
Marc Anthony and Jennifer Lopez arrive at the 78th Annual Academy Awards March 5, 2006.
Actress Maggie Gyllenhaal arrives with Peter Sarsgaard at the Oscar ceremony March 5, 2006, in Los Angeles.
Jessica Alba, right, shares a moment with Cash Warren as they arrive for the Oscars.
Hey! There's George Clooney again, and Michelle Williams is with him! Good thing boyfriend Heath Ledger fixed her dress. (See photo no. 6.)
Catherine Keener, who was nominated for her supporting performance in "Capote," arrives with the director of "Friends with Money," Nicole Holofcener.
Sandra Bullock and Keanu Reeves arrive at the Oscars. They starred together in the 1994 hit "Speed" and attended the ceremony as platonic dates. (She wed "Monster Garage" host Jesse James last summer.) Bullock was part of the acting ensemble of "Crash."
Nicole Kidman arrives for the Academy Awards. During the Oscar ceremony, she sat with her boyfriend, country crooner Keith Urban, but on the red carpet, she was on her own.
All right. Let's face it. George Clooney is the King Schmoozer. Signing autographs and making it a "good night" for the folks in the bleachers is a key part of those royal duties, but he seems to be loving it as much as he enjoyed smooching Jennifer, Uma and Dolly.
