Antonio Miro stirred things up by choosing illegal Senegalese immigrants to model his Autumn/Winter 2007-8 collection in Barcelona on Jan. 18, 2007. The designer said he wanted to draw attention to the plight of Africans who risk a hazardous sea voyage for a chance at better lives in Europe.

In Milan, Nobel literature laureate Dario Fo startled the crowd at the Romeo Gigli show with an art lecture while models danced in front of reproductions of 16th-century paintings by Mantegna or, as at left, just peered at the pictures. Gentucca Bini's collection for Gigli neatly picked up the rich colors in Mantegna's "Triumphs of Caesar." Fo said he wanted to shake up Italy's staid fashion scene.

Heavyweight fabrics and macho imagery dominated the scene at the DSquared show in Milan. The self-styled "street label" counts Justin Timberlake, Lenny Kravitz and Madonna among its celebrity clients. In a week of menswear collections, Milan's designers conjured an image of the gentleman skier, at home on the slopes and in the city. Frida Giannini said her collection for Gucci is "very James Bond; all about the jet set crowd of the 1960s and 1970s." Moschino, the fashion house that declines to take fashion seriously, topped its show on Jan. 16, 2007, with a finale during which models paraded in white T-shirts with black ties or tuxedo bibs printed down the front.

While most menswear designers stuck with basic black, Miuccia Prada sent out brightly colored fuzzy teddy bears in human form. Her show exuded coziness, from woolen caps and fuzzy ponchos to wooly leggings and pointed shoes.
