End game for Boston bomber suspect

The capture of Tsarnaev - one of two suspects in the bombing of the Boston Marathon - touched off raucous celebrations in and around Boston, with chants of "USA, USA" as residents flooded the streets in relief and jubilation after four tense days, including a day in which the city of Boston was in virtual lockdown.

Boston officials speak on bombing suspect capture

Dzhokar Tsarnaev - the remaining suspect wanted in connection with the Boston Marathon bombing - evaded capture following a vicious gunfight with police in Watertown, Mass., in the early morning hours of Friday, April 19, 2013, during which explosives were lobbed at law enforcement. Tsarnaev's older brother, Tamerlan, died in the gun battle, and a police officer was critically wounded.

A day-long sweep of Watertown - during which the environs of Boston was placed in lockdown - failed to turn up the missing suspect. But late in the afternoon a Watertown resident noticed blood on a boat hitched in the backyard of a house on Franklin Street. Inside was a bloody Dzhokar Tsarnaev - potentially armed and dangerous.

After a tense tumultuous all-day manhunt and house-to-house search by thousands of elite police team officers with rifles and armored vehicles, Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, 19, was cornered in a homeowner's yard, where he exchanged gunfire with police while holed up in a boat, authorities said.

He was taken away on a stretcher and was hospitalized in serious condition with unspecified injuries, police said.
