"This mission shows that NASA is trying to be ready for whatever the universe throws at us," NASA Administrator Bill Nelson said.
The 14,000-mph impact is designed to test whether a future threatening asteroid can be nudged off course.
NASA will attempt to slam a spaceship into an asteroid in hopes of changing its course Monday night.
