Young Women Give Their Best At Phillies' Ball Girl Tryouts
By Michelle Durham
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Today was tryout day for women who aspire to be a Phillies ball girl.
These ladies are considered ambassadors of the baseball organization and need to be skilled in handling themselves at charitable events as well as on the field at Citizens Bank Park.
They were tested on fielding and batting, and much more, according to Michele DeVicaris, manager of community and charity events for the Phillies, who is in charge of the tryouts.
"We're also going to have them do an on-camera interview so we can see how they handle themselves on TV and radio -- how they think on the fly," she tells KYW Newsradio.
DeVicaris says the interview is crucial because 90 percent of the ball girls' work is representing the Phillies at charitable events.
Mackenzie Kramer, in her second year as a ball girl, agrees.
"What people think is that we are on the field, catch foul balls, and talk to the fans," she says. "But that is only about 10 percent of what we do."
Jessica Henry (below right) hopes to be a ball girl.
"I have been playing this sport since I was five and just always loved the Phillies," Henry said today.
Applicants also had to answer a Phillies quiz.
"Right now I'm in the right state of mind and I'm just trying to make the team," said Tyanna Hudson (below left), who would also love to be a ball girl.
