Why Marriages Fail….They Don't Have To End In Divorce

After almost 40 years of a divorce practice, it is clear to me that some marriages do not have to end.

It is interesting that you need to training to get a driver's license, but almost none to get a marriage license. So what kinds of things should you learn before you get married that will make a good marriage?

  • A sense of humor certainly helps. Keeping things in perspective and taking the little things in stride helps relationships.
  • Say something nice to your spouse every day. We forget how important it is and people tend to listen better when they have had a compliment of any kind.
  • Keep your spouse informed about your day so he or she can keep up with your life. We tend to speak more to the people we work with than we do with the person we live with and that is not helpful as the years go by.
  • Most importantly, prioritize the marriage. Make a weekly date with your spouse and keep it. Nothing, not work, not a television show, not a friend's invitation or anything else should cause that date to be broken. That tells your spouse how important he or she is in your life.

These tips aren't just for the newly married. Committing to these may save a marriage that has seen many anniversaries.
