Weekend Box Office Report: 'Tomorrowland' Lands Top Spot
By Bill Wine
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Today Tomorrowland can look back on yesterday as the completion of a successful opening weekend.
The family science fiction saga starring George Clooney finished first at the box office, although not by much, earning an estimated $32-million on its debut weekend.
That made a close runner-up of last weekend's box-office leader, Pitch Perfect 2, which took in $30-million.
Third place went to the holdover sequel, Mad Max: Fury Road, with a total of $24-million.
Fourth belonged to the weekend's other new attraction -- the horror-thriller remake, Poltergeist – which earned $23-million.
And fifth was the blockbuster, Avengers: Age of Ultron. It took in another $21-million as it closed in on the $400-million mark.
That means all five of the top five topped the $20-million mark, the first time that has ever happened on Memorial Day weekend.
