PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- A new supernatural horror thriller conjured up big business on its opening weekend.
The Conjuring debuted with an opening weekend estimate of $42-million and a strong first-place box-office finish.
The holdover hit, Despicable Me 2, claimed the runnerup spot with $25-million, following two straight weeks in first place, and bringing its runaway cumulative total over the $275-million mark.
The new animated adventure, Turbo, was third with $22-million, while the holdover comedy, Grown Ups 2, with Adam Sandler, was fourth with $20-million.
Rounding out the top five was the debuting thriller sequel, RED 2, with Bruce Willis, which took in $19-million.
The weekend's fourth new attraction, the sci-fi action comedy, R.I.P.D., with Ryan Reynolds and Jeff Bridges, scared up $13-million, good for seventh place.
Overall, industry-wide totals were on pretty much of a par with last weekend, but were considerably lower than those of the counterpart weekend a year ago.
