Villanova Hosts Maine Saturday In CAA Action

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- The Villanova Wildcats will be home on Halloween night as they welcome the Maine Black Bears to the Main Line for a Colonial Athletic Association match-up.

Villanova (3-4 overall, 2-2 in the CAA) is coming off a frustrating loss to Towson last weekend. The Wildcats rolled up 421 yards of offense, but lost to the Tigers 28-21. Towson devastated the Wildcats with big plays, scoring on a 78-yard run and adding a pair of interception returns for touchdowns, including one that went for 86 yards in the fourth quarter, effectively icing the game.

"It was one of those games where we won the stats victory, but didn't win the game," Villanova head coach Andy Talley tells KYW Newsradio. "Two pick-sixes will pretty much do most teams in. It was a shame because we played well enough, our defense played great. I think overall, we could've easily won the game but it's one we let getaway."

The Wildcats are already playing with their backup quarterback, redshirt freshman Zach Bednarczyk, because starter John Robertson suffered a season-ending knee injury last month. Now they are also dealing with a banged up running back position.

"We lost (junior) Javon White, our starting tailback, with a broken leg which is sad and disappointing for him and us," Talley says. "(Senior) Gary Underwood has to pick it up a little bit. (Sophomore) Matt Gudzak had a great game, he's got a little bit of a separated shoulder and I'm hoping he'll be back in time to play (against Maine)."

Gudzak rushed for a team high 96 yards and a touchdown against Towson.

Maine is also 3-4 this season and the Black Bears are coming off a 23-10 win over Stony Brook.

"Maine right now is 3-1 in the league and they think they can be a contender," Talley says. "So we have our work cut out. They're really not a great offensive team, but a real good defensive team. So it's a coin toss."

Last season, Villanova beat Maine up in Orono, 41-20.

Saturday's game kicks off at 7:30pm.
