Tree Crushes Home In Chester County

By Elizabeth Hur

SOUTH COVENTRY, Pa. (CBS) - A giant tree topples and crushes a family's home yet incredibly, the one person inside escaped without a scratch.

The damage is substantial on Chestnut Lane in South Coventry, Chester County.

The homeowner showed us the debris filled bedroom and explained, "This is Jill's room and this is where she hangs out."

It's where Sharon Kelly's daughter, Jill, would have been when a passing storm knocked down a massive Poplar tree in their backyard. It crashed right onto the Kelly home. Sharon's son was inside at the time and called Sharon right away.

Sharon Kelly explained, "And he said, 'Oh My God, Jill's room is gone.' My daughter's room is gone. If she was home, she would have been killed instantly. She was just dropped off at her friend's house to go to the shore for the weekend."

Scott Wysocki, also of South Coventry recalled, "Bang. All you heard were bang bang bang from the thunder and the lightning."

Wysocki snapped pictures of the aftermath once the storm blew passed the area around 3:30 Thursday afternoon.

"It just went right through the center of the neighborhood. The trees were sideways and started howling and it was the weirdest and loudest howling you've heard in your life," Wysocki said.

Wysocki's fiancée, Jennifer Lewis added, "We just spent the last two hours, along with everybody else in the neighborhood cleaning everything up. Five chain saws per house were going and chopping up trees in people's yards."

Trying to clean up before nightfall, with power out and tree branches strewn all over. It was a busy night for all.

"Everybody chipped in to help everybody out. We're just fortunate everybody's ok," Wysocki said.

"This was a blessing to me as soon as I drove up knowing that she was not home, I was already talking to my son on the phone, it was a blessing" Kelly concluded.
