Eastern State Penitentiary was in operation from 1829 to 1971. The penitentiary was a state-of-the-art facility as a solitary confinement institution. The penitentiary's principles were based on reforming the inmates as opposed to punishment. The prison is a U.S National Historic Landmark and is located in the Fairmount neighborhood of Philadelphia.
