Philadelphia has an excellent local music scene that incorporates almost every genre, including heavy metal. Venues like the Legendary Dobbs and Kung Fu Necktie frequently host heavy metal showcases where you might be able to catch one of the following bands.
Ashes of Our Sins
Ashes of Our Sins formed in 2011. Its sound is influenced by classic rock bands like Motley Crue and Alice Cooper, but also by newer rock acts, such as Bullet For My Valentine and Avenged Sevenfold. The band recently released its debut EP, "Born In Blood," and you can hear them live all throughout Philadelphia, including at local venues Kung Fu Necktie, The Legendary Dobbs and the Voltage Lounge.
Crown of Earth
Crown of Earth is a progressive, hard-rocking and classic-sounding metal band from Jenkintown, PA that is influenced greatly by bands like Iron Maiden, Judas Priest and Metallica. The band released its debut album last year and, as avid supports of the Philadelphia Veterans House, the single, "Born Again Warrior," is a tribute to veterans and a portion of the song's proceeds are donated to help veterans in need.
In 2012, MACH22 won Guitar Center's Onstage with Slash contest, handpicked by Slash to open for the legendary guitarist at the House of Blues in Atlantic City. It has been only uphill from there, as the band has performed at Jay Z's Made in America Festival and has opened for Thin Lizzy and Steel Panther. MACH22's debut album, "Sweet Talk Intervention," was released last year and has garnered positive reviews. After touring the country in support of its album, the band is gearing up to hit the studio to record the follow-up.

Pool of Thorns
Pool of Thorns started in 2009 and is led by front woman Domino Del Sol. The band plays two to four shows a week, up and down the East Coast and frequently in Philadelphia, including venues like the Legendary Dobbs and XO Lounge. Influenced by hard rock bands such as Tool, Rage Against the Machine, KoRN and Metallica, the five members are currently working on their upcoming album, "Final Hour," and planning a national tour for later this year.
Volt is a young band from New Jersey, formed in 2011. All of its members are in their early 20s, but the band's music derives heavily from classic metal bands, including Led Zeppelin, Iron Maiden and Ozzy Osbourne. Volt released its self-titled EP last year, which was recorded at 0X1 Sound Studio in Cherry Hill and can be heard on Reverbnation. The band plays both covers and originals all around Philly venues including the Legendary Dobbs.
