Study: Number Of Childhood Concussions Are Under-Counted
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Concussions are not only a hot-button issue for professional football players. Children who take part in contact sports are also at risk for suffering from head injuries and new research says that number of children getting hurt, could be higher than the statistics say.
The number of children that are suffering concussions, each year, is going under-counted. This information comes from a new study in the Journal of Pediatrics.
The study says that nearly half a million children go to the emergency room with concussions every year.
Researchers say that's only a fraction of the real number of children that suffer concussions.
Up to a million children with concussions were not seen by a physician at all. The majority are diagnosed by athletic trainers.
