PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Pennsylvania State Representative Amen Brown, a Democrat, announced his campaign for mayor of Philadelphia Friday afternoon.

The campaign event was hosted at the University Square Plaza Senior Community Center.

Brown is 35 years old and if elected, he would be the youngest mayor in the city's history. 

He joins a long list of candidates that includes several former city council members – Cherelle Parker, Helen Gym, Maria Quinones Sanchez, Derek Green and Allan Domb. 

Also on the list are former city controller Rebecca Rhynhart, grocery store owner Jeff Brown, and former Philadelphia municipal court judge Jimmy DeLeon.

The primary is next May.
