SEPTA Honors Rosa Parks With Reserved Seat On Route 38 Bus
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- SEPTA riders this week on the Route 38 bus will notice a seat set aside for a civil rights giant. It is part of the transportation authority's Black History Month remembrance of Rosa Parks.
The Route 38 bus seat is decorated with flowers and a picture of Parks.
In 1955, Parks refused to give up her seat on a Montgomery, Alabama bus and was arrested.
The idea to honor Parks on a bus came from a SEPTA employee.
"We will never go back to the way it was, and those words are as relevant today as the day she said them. Transit, race, and equality have always been intertwined," SEPTA CEO and General manager Leslie Richards said.
The bus destination sign has also been changed for the month of February. It will say "Remembering Rosa Parks."
