School Reform Commission Begins Process Of Closing 3 Charter Schools

By Mike DeNardo

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - The School Reform Commission has started the process to close three Philadelphia charter schools.

Emotional decisions as the future of a number of schools hinged on votes from the School Reform Commission.  The SRC last night decided not to renew the charters of the Arise Academy, Truebright Science Academy, and the Hope Charter School.

Distrct staffers cited substandard academic performance at the schools. It's only the first step in the process. The closures wouldn't take effect until the fall, public hearings will be scheduled and the schools can appeal to the state.

The SRC also vited to turn three failing district-run schools: Cleveland Elementary, Edmunds Elementary and the Jones Middle School over to charters under its Renaissance Schools program.  The SRC postponed a decision on Creighton Elementary, which was also up for a charter conversion.
