Runner Profile: Heather Caldwell

Heather Caldwell
Medford, NJ

Favorite kicks: Brooks

Pre-race ritual: Getting good sleep the week leading up to a race, eating healthy, hydrating and tapering.

Pre-race snack: Cereal and a cup of tea

Tips for new runners: You don't have to run a long distance to get started. Go for a walk and add a few short running segments. Anyone can run for just a minute. Keep doing this and you will be able to build up your endurance over time. Don't compare yourself or your progress to other runners. Take pride in every step forward you make. I also recommend that you get fitted for a good pair of running shoes.

Why she runs: I started running after I turned 40 as a way to help reduce my blood pressure and lower my fasting blood sugar. I never thought I would fall in love with running, but I did. I'm glad to say running worked as both my blood pressure and fasting blood sugar are now very healthy!
