"ROFL" And "Glamping" Among 1,000+ Words Added To Oxford English Dictionary
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- More than 1,000 words have been added to the Oxford English Dictionary as part of their latest update.
Below are a few of the additions you may already have or end up incorporating into your vocabulary.
Air punch: An act of thrusting one's clenched fist up into the air, typically as a gesture of triumph or elation.
Craft beer: A beer made in a traditional or non-mechanized way by a small brewery.
Dive bar: A shabby or sleazy bar or similar establishment.
Dirty martini: A cocktail made with gin or vodka, dry vermouth and a small amount of olive brine typically garnished with a green olive.
Fro-yo: Frozen yogurt.
Hockey mom: Much like a soccer mom, these mothers devote a great deal of time and effort to supporting their children's participation in the sport of ice hockey.
Glamping: A form of camping that involves more luxuries not usually associated with traditional camping thus making it a more glamorous experience.
Junkball: An off-speed pitch that moves erratically, such as a breaking ball or knuckleball.
K-pop: Korean pop music.
Krump: Dance to popular music, especially hip-hop, in a style characterized by rapid, exaggerated movements of the arms and legs.
Listicle: A piece of writing or other content presented wholly or partly in the form of a list.
Power couple: A couple consisting of two people who are each influential or successful in their own right.
ROFL: Verb originally used in electronic communications that signifies someone is rolling on the floor laughing to show something is funny.
Secret shopper: A person employed by a manufacturer or retailer to pose as a shopper in order to evaluate the quality of customer service. Also called mystery shopper.
Self-identity: To identify (oneself) closely with a particular person, group, etc.; to identify (oneself) as belonging to a group or category.
SMH: Shaking (or shake) my head is a saying used in electronic communication to express disapproval, exasperation, or frustration.
Snapback: A baseball cap with a large flat brim and an adjustable strap at the back consisting of two pieces of plastic that snap together.
Sneakerhead: A sneaker enthusiast.
Starter Marriage: A short-lived marriage, typically when viewed as a form of preparation for a subsequent, more long-lasting one.
TL;DR: Used as a dismissive response to a lengthy online post.
Wearable: Denoting or relating to a computer or other electronic device that is small or light enough to be worn or carried on one's body.
