Pumpkins Soar At Rowan University's Pumpkin Chuckin' Competition

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Halloween is over and that meant pumpkins were soaring into the sky at Rowan University.
It's the 10th Annual Pumpkin' Chuckin' event.
"Basically the competition is shooting pumpkins at targets 100 feet away," said Danielle Cristino, President of Rowan's chapter of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers.
It was nine teams of college and high school students. Future engineers of the world like Rowan sophomore Matt Leoncini, tossing three pound pumpkins at battleship-shaped targets using a team built trebuchet.
"This one is actually a floating axel trebuchet because the axel can move back and forth as it launches," Leoncini said.
Dick Winkelmayer is here cheering on his daughter, a University of Delaware junior following in his engineering footsteps. Tuition money well spent he says.
"We didn't have anything this much fun. She's really getting a good opportunity to not only do the hands on but also the theoretical school work. It's a good combination," Winkelmayer said.
