Positively Philadelphia: Another Summer of Concerts in a Fairmount Park Mansion

by Lauren Lipton

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- This might be one of the loveliest things to do on a Sunday night in Philadelphia in summer.

"This is our 40th anniversary of Concerts by Candlelight at Laurel Hill Mansion.," says Barbara Frankl (top photo), music chairperson for the concert series.  "We're in the historic mansion built by Rebecca Rawle in 1767."

Frankl says the first of this year's concerts is on June 28th.

"After our concerts, we have a reception with light refreshments on the porch overlooking the Schuylkill River and the Strawberry Mansion Bridge, at sunset.  At that time you get a chance to meet and greet the artists," she tells Positively Philadelphia.

The concerts are held in the same room of the house that was used for concerts back in the day.  And, Frankl notes, the acoustics are very good.

"It's one of those things in the city that is overlooked," she says, "that people need to hear about and see and be part of, because it's truly a unique experience."

The concerts are put on by Women for Greater Philadelphia, a nonprofit group whose mission is to promote and enhance the historical, philosophical, educational, and cultural value of Greater Philadelphia and to maintain and preserve Laurel Hill Mansion.

And for this week, that's "Positively Philadelphia!"
