Police: Suspect Accidentally Enacts Cellphone's Emergency Mode While Planning Robbery
DANVILLE, Ky. (CBS) -- A 911 dispatcher in Kentucky was able to overhear two men allegedly planning to rob a bar after one of the suspects accidentally enacted the emergency mode on his cellphone.
The Advocate-Messenger reports the two suspects, Robert Bourne and David Grigsby, were drinking at Brothers BBQ in Danville this past Saturday. According to police, the two then left the restaurant and sat in a car in the parking lot talking about how they were going to rob the place.
According to The Advocate-Messenger, Danville Police Chief Tony Gray was at the restaurant when one of his officers made his way over to him to tell him about what the 911 dispatcher was hearing about a planned robbery.
"There was some conversation about when they should do it, they might be recognized if they do it in Danville, and I think they did talk about some different locations," Gray told the newspaper. "Somewhere in the conversation my name was brought up."
The officer asked Gray if he accidentally called 911 since his name was mentioned.
"When we stepped out back to talk, the dispatcher was able to pinpoint the phone, and the call was coming from somewhere in the parking lot at Brothers," Gray told The Advocate-Messenger. "At that time, they located the two suspects sitting in the vehicle."
Gray said the men were then pulled out of the vehicle and a mask was found on one of the suspects, but no weapons were found.
"They were just in earlier having a beer," restaurant owner Mike Southerland told The Advocate-Messenger. "I saw a ski mask they'd taken from them and it was on the top of the car, and I thought, 'Holy crap, they were seriously ready to do it.'"
Bourne and Grigsby were each charged with public intoxication, and Grigsby was also charged with possession of an open alcohol container in a vehicle and disorderly conduct.
Both suspects were released on their own recognizances.
