Philly Schoolteacher to Politicians: Spend An Hour In My Classroom!
By Mike DeNardo
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- A Philadelphia public school teacher has a challenge for Mayor Nutter and Governor Corbett: teach for an hour in her classroom.
Judy Willner is a veteran third-grade teacher at Pennell Elementary School in the Ogontz section of the city. She wrote on Facebook that the mayor and governor should spend some time in front of her overcrowded class, and she asked them "how to handle the rude and disrespectful kids and still maintain control of [her] class."
Willner admits she was just blowing off steam online.
"My friends (and I) were all kind of complaining about how hard it is and unfair it is for everybody. So I just put it out there. I was not going to send the letter, it was just a venting. I write all sorts of things up there because I'm a big advocate for my students," she said today.
Willner challenged the mayor and governor never to blame teachers for the problems the Philadelphia school district is having.
She says she doesn't really expect a response from City Hall or Harrisburg.
