Phillies Honor Group Of Volunteer Divers With Recognition And Funds
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- The Phillies honored community heroes on Monday night with a special salute. One local organization received a "game-changing," salute from the team.
"We rely 100 percent on donations like this," Sunny Longordo said. Longordo is a member of the Garden State Underwater Recovery Rescue and the $10,000 grant, her group received from the Phillies on Monday, will go a long way to aiding the effort.
The members of the group dive when other won't, or can't.
"We love to dive," Longordo said.
On January 3, a volunteer with Garden State recovered the body of Shane Montgomery in the Schuylkill River. The 21-year-old disappeared Thanksgiving morning 2014.
The Phillies thought the group of volunteers deserved some recognition and some much needed financial support. The team presented them with the $10,000 grant at their charities holiday giving party.
The divers pick up searches after police and rescue divers have to move on, sometimes leaving family members no one to turn to find their loved ones.
