Philadelphia Middle Schooler In Hot Water After Shooting Classmate With Toy Gun

By Mike DeNardo

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- A Philadelphia seventh-grader is in police custody after he allegedly shot a classmate with a toy gun.

It happened in math class at the HA Brown School, on Sergeant Street in Kensington, around 11:30am this morning.

"The seventh grader brought in a plastic pellet gun and shot one of his fellow students in the back of the head," says school district spokesman Fernando Gallard.  "There were no injuries."

District investigators were trying to determine what may have led to the shooting.

Gallard says the victim was examined by the school nurse.  Gallard says even though the pellet caused no injury, the student with the gun was taken into custody by Philadelphia police.

Gallard adds that a pellet gun is a weapon under school district rules, and the student will be suspended and referred for expulsion.
