More Than 100 Flights Canceled At Philadelphia International Airport Due To Winter Storm
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- The weather is disrupting air travel. So far on Friday, more than 100 flights have been canceled at Philadelphia International Airport.
"I'm nervous, that's why I'm here early," Damien Gibbs, whose flight got delayed, said. "Just to be sure."
Winter weather throughout the country is translating to dozens of delays and cancellations at Philly International
"We were a little nervous," Jonathan Mallen said. "We actually changed our flight a couple days ago. We were supposed to go through Chicago but got a little spooked."
Mallen is going on vacation and did not want to get started on the wrong foot.
"We were trying to move flights to earlier today, so we could get out earlier and try to beat the storm," he added.
The system now impacting the Lehigh and Delaware Valley has made its way across the country – at one point stretching 2,300 miles from Texas to Maine.
"We are dealing with one of the most significant icing events that we've had in the state of Texas in at least several decades," Texas Gov. Greg Abbott said.
In Texas, icy power lines and fallen tree limbs knocked out electricity to thousands. Meanwhile, in Indiana, plows were busy on slick roads as crews tried to keep up with snow.
And in Alabama, the storm even spawned a deadly tornado outbreak.
But back here in the Delaware Valley, PHL says its de-icing equipment is ready should it be needed later Friday.
Travelers though are hoping that won't be necessary.
"Fingers crossed," Gibbs said.
Still, they know the risks of traveling during winter and are trying to make the most of a messy situation.
"COVID took over our lives," Zena Ezekiel said. "You gotta live the rest of it."
The tried and true advice applies Friday. Make sure to check your flight status with your airline before leaving home.
