Tow truck driver sought after man killed in South Philadelphia hit-and-run, police say

A man was killed in a hit-and-run involving a tow truck in South Philadelphia Sunday night, police said.

It happened at South 26th Street and Penrose Avenue near the George C. Platt Memorial Bridge around 9:30 p.m.

Officers arrived on the scene and found the man in the street, Inspector D F Pace told CBS News Philadelphia. Medics pronounced him dead on the scene after attempting to save his life.

Police did not know the victim's identity, but believe he was experiencing homelessness and frequented the area. The victim was likely in the middle of the crosswalk at the moment of impact.

Investigators believe, based on tire tracks and other evidence at the scene, that the vehicle involved is a dually tow truck, Pace said. A dually truck can be recognized by its four wheels on the rear axle.

It's not clear which tow company the truck was affiliated with.

Police are looking for surveillance video that captured where the tow truck went after the crash. Anyone with information is asked to come forward.
