Philadelphia Catholic School Teachers Negotiate New Contract With Archdiocese

By Pat Loeb

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- The Archdiocese of Philadelphia says it has reached a tentative contract agreement with the teachers' union, the Association of Catholic Teachers.

Neither side would disclose the terms of the contract until the union votes on it.  No vote has been scheduled, but it's expected to come before the end of the month.

The teachers have been working under an extension of the one-year contract they approved in May 2014. They rejected an "early bird" offer on wages and benefits the archdiocese had made last month, in favor of full negotiations.

A joint statement from the archdiocese and the union says the new contract would take effect September 1st, insuring labor peace for the start of the school year and the papal visit a few weeks later.
