Philadelphia Author Wins National Science Fiction Writing Award
By John Ostapkovich
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- A novel by a 34-year-old Philadelphia writer has just won an award in the science fiction/fantasy field.
The phrase "be careful what you wish for" has some interesting connections to EC Myers and his book, Fair Coin.
"Fair Coin is about a boy who finds a coin," Myers says. "When he makes a wish and flips the coin, his wish comes true if it lands on heads. And if it lands on tails, his wish comes true but with unexpected consequences."
Fair Coin won the "Andre Norton Award for Young Adult Fiction," given each year by the Science Fiction Writers of America alongside its "Nebula" awards in other categories.
Myers attended his first SFWA convention back in 2000 as a fan, but last weekend, in San Jose, Calif., he was a nominee and then a winner, beating some major names in the field.
Fair Coin already has a sequel, Quantum Coin, but Myers says his next book will be on a different subject.
