Perseid Meteor Shower Disappoints Stargazers Locally
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - The Perseid Meteor Shower was advertised by the experts as one of the best to watch in years, and some people from our area gave up sleep to gaze into the sky.
NASA said the Perseids had the potential to be the most impressive since 2007, the last time the meteor shower didn't have moonlight to compete with.
Potentially up to 100 meteors per hour Wednesday night into this morning, the peak happened about 4 a.m., according to NASA.
"I just learned about this two hours ago," says Mia, who learned about the Perseids from Andrew, who says Belmont Plateau is the best place to be for this.
"It's elevated," he says. "You can see some stars here but not as much as I thought it would be."
There's that disappointment in his voice, expecting something out of a movie:
"I was really stoked about it. It was all over social media that this was going to happen and I just wanted to see a show. But seems like nothing's here."
But it wasn't a total loss with some quick flashes across the sky. Blink and you may have missed it.
If you didn't see any of this, NASA says there will be a great show in December with the Gemenids Meteor Shower.
