Pa. Lawmakers Turn Attention To Fate Of Foxwoods Casino License
By Tony Romeo
HARRISBURG, Pa. (CBS) - Now that the state Supreme Court has rejected Foxwoods' appeal of its license revocation, attention turns to whether that license will remain in Philadelphia end up somewhere else in the state or end up nowhere at all.
On Friday, after the state Supreme Court rejected the Foxwoods investors' petition to appeal revocation of their license, the chairman of the Gaming Control Board released a statement saying that current law designates the license remain in Philadelphia, but that it would be "prudent" to wait to see what the legislature will do before starting a new license process.
There is a bill in the House that would open the license up to statewide competition. But Erik Arneson, spokesman for Chester Republican Dominic Pileggi, the Senate majority leader, says his boss is leaning toward deleting the license.
"Given this recent court decision, it may very well make sense to consider not awarding this final license at all."
Arneson says putting the casino nowhere may be the better option, "Because the gaming market in Pennsylvania over time has been shown to be fairly well saturated with the casinos that have already been licensed."
